Rigging an aerial hoop (also known as a lyra) to a Prodigy Yoga Rig is a practical way to practice aerial arts at home or in a studio. The Prodigy Yoga Rig is a portable, height-adjustable A-frame designed primarily for aerial yoga but suitable for conditioning and basic moves on an aerial hoop. This article provides a step-by-step guide to safely rig an aerial hoop to the Prodigy Yoga Rig, ensuring stability and safety for your practice.

Safety First

Before rigging, understand that aerial arts involve significant risks. The Prodigy Yoga Rig has a Working Load Limit (WLL) of 230 kg (507 lbs) for low-level dynamic loading, suitable for aerial yoga and conditioning but not for dynamic hoop moves or performances. Always get instruction from professionals and ensure all equipment is rated for aerial use.

How to rig

  1. Assemble the Prodigy Yoga Rig - Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set up the rig.
  2. Create your anchor point - For a zero or 1 point hoop, choke one 30cm Prodigy aerial sling around the top bar of the Yoga Rig.
  3. Attach carabiner to sling
  4. Attach the hoop:
Single Point: Attach the carabiner to the tap on top and ensure it is securely closed. 0 point - Choke a polyester strop around the top of the hoop. Attach the other end of the strop to the carabiner.
  5. Adding in a swivel - If you would like the hoop to spin, you will need to add a swivel and an extra carabiner. Attach the swivel to the first carabiner on the sling, and add the second to attach to the hoop (single point) or strop (zero point)
  6. Height Adjustment: You can adjust the hoop height using different length slings or strops. The hoop should be low enough for conditioning (e.g., hip height) or higher for full moves, depending on your ceiling and preference.

Your finished set up should look something like this! (zero point, no swivel)

Tips for safe practice

  • Place a Crash Mat: Position a thick (20cm) crash mat under the hoop to cushion potential falls.
  • Test Load: The rig’s WLL (230 kg) supports low-level dynamic loading. Avoid dynamic moves (e.g., drops or swings) as the rig is not designed for high dynamic forces.
  • Supervision: Never train alone. Have a spotter or instructor present.
  • Regular Inspection: Check all equipment for wear before each use, including slings, carabiners, and the hoop.
