Circus Maximus - The UK's First Circus Competition
Think of the best circuses you’ve seen – think of the circuses you may not have seen but are regarded as the best in the world. How many of them are British? I’d imagine most of your lists contain very few, if any, British circuses.
Yet, we have some great talent here but according to Daisy Drury, director of development at Circus Space, “they all go straight to rivals abroad.” This is the driving force behind the Circus Maximus competition; to promote and encourage talented British circus artists and to showcase the best of the entries to the Great British public.
Entrants are encouraged from all corners of the circus world, from amateur enthusiasts to professionally trained artists, from ground-based acts like jugglers and unicyclists to acrobats and aerialists. The judges are on the lookout for creative, original and entertaining acts executed to an exceptional standard.
The deadline for entries is the 24th March 2013. Based on these video entries, the judges will compile a shortlist and invite those listed to come and perform in front of an audience and a panel of judges in Underbelly’s upside-down purple cow tent outside London’s Southbank Centre during May 2013. The heats will be judged by the audience and the winners, plus one wildcard picked by the judging panel, will progress onto the Grand Final to be held on 1st June.
The overall winner will be picked by the judges but they will take the audience’s choice of their favourite finalist into account as well. The winner will walk away with £5000 in cash; two-week’s free training space at Circus Space and a chance to develop a show with Underbelly Productions.
