Hacky Sacks

Hacky sacks are also known as footbags. For those unfamiliar with this game the hack is passed between the players using the feet, knees and any other part of the body other than your hands. That is one of only two rules of the game – no hands – the other is no apologising! Hacky sac is a bit like keepy-up with a football but the hack’s size and shape allow lots of different tricks to be performed. “Hack” is called once the hacky is passed between everyone without it touching the ground.

Hackey sacks are generally small balls under-filled with sand to make tricks like stalls easier. Some are more solid and more round giving them more bounce off your body. You can get wicker balls which are light but rigid and used in the Burmese (Myanmar) game of Chinlone which is very similar to the game hacky sack.

Footbags are popular with surfers as playing the game helps to develop balance. Jugglers also love them for the element of technical skill. However, footbag is a sport in its own right with various regional, national and international championships featuring circles and solo competitions.
